Enjoy a snake that often disappears
Kenyan sand boas spend much of their time beneath cover or substrate. A keeper should be comfortable with that behaviour rather than continually digging the animal up for display. Oakland Zoo describes a burrowing ambush predator, with females larger than males. This entry covers Eryx colubrinus; other sand boas are separate animals with their own planning needs.
Give burrowing a safe structure
Colorado Exotics uses a 36 × 18 × 18 inch enclosure as its minimum reference, approximately 91 × 46 × 46 cm. Provide deep substrate for full submergence. Set heavy rocks and water containers on stable supports so tunnelling cannot undermine them. Check the lid and door openings carefully: a fossorial snake still needs an escape-resistant enclosure. Recheck usable length as the animal grows.
Measure the surface and refuge
The veterinary plan uses about 35°C (95°F) at the basking area and 24–27°C (75–80°F) on the cool side. Control heat with an appropriate thermostat and verify conditions independently. A surface reading does not reveal every buried position, so check occupied refuges too. Provide a daylight cycle and low-intensity UVB with shade and safe fixture clearance.
A dry habitat still needs water
ReptiFiles recommends a mainly dry environment with access to a humid hide. Keep drinking water available and inspect the moisture refuge regularly. Avoid sealing the entire enclosure to chase a high humidity reading. If the snake repeatedly uses only one retreat, compare security as well as climate before changing the heat setting; hiding behaviour alone cannot tell you which factor it prefers.
Meals without guesswork
The veterinary source recommends appropriately sized whole prey, ideally frozen-thawed. Confirm the previous keeper’s feeding routine and use it as your starting record, then adjust with body condition and veterinary advice. Log refusals alongside weight. Do not keep offering extra prey simply because the animal remains hidden, and do not interpret a long refusal as harmless without considering condition and health.
Plan for ongoing care costs
Oakland Zoo reports 15–30 years in protected care. Our standard budget includes the furnished adult enclosure, substrate replacement, regulated heat, prey storage and veterinary reserve. Keep the habitat plan and daily checks in the notebook so another keeper can continue them. Schedule inspections of buried support points during cleaning; an attractive rock arrangement must remain stable after months of tunnelling.
Make age part of the feeding record
Colorado Exotics distinguishes babies from older juveniles and adults when describing meal intervals. Its routine moves from more frequent early meals to longer adult intervals, using appropriately sized whole prey.
Ask for the animal’s approximate age and recent prey sizes, not just the answer that it eats mice. Put that history beside the feeding record. At growth reviews, reassess portion and interval together instead of automatically increasing both whenever a larger prey item becomes available.

Reduce bedding contact during feeding
ReptiFiles suggests offering thawed prey with soft-tipped feeding tools. If the boa does not take prey from them, its alternative is a small plate or dish to limit substrate sticking to the meal.
Reserve a washable feeding dish and record which presentation the snake accepts. Remove it for cleaning after use, so food remains do not disappear into the bedding. Keep the successful presentation consistent while establishing a new animal’s routine.

Observe at the times the snake uses
Oakland Zoo describes daytime concealment followed by possible hunting activity at night or early morning. It also describes natural retreats beyond open sand, including logs and holes.
Try observing quietly at different times and note which covered routes are used. This can inform where you place additional cork cover without exposing the snake for display. After rearranging furnishings, compare activity with the previous pattern and retain a familiar retreat while the animal investigates.

Design a check that does not require daily excavation
Mark the sand boa's usual resting zones and the water position on a simple enclosure sketch. During routine care, check the accessible resources and signs of movement before dismantling its cover. Schedule necessary direct inspections with the animal's established routine in mind.
Keep photographs of the empty enclosure showing supports beneath heavy furnishings. If substrate is moved during cleaning, restore those supports rather than placing a rock on top of fresh loose bedding. This is especially useful for a substitute keeper unfamiliar with how much of the habitat is hidden below the visible surface.
Treat substrate replacement as an enclosure change
Record the material, depth and date when replacing bedding. Then verify that door closures, water stability and the occupied warm and cooler refuges still work as intended. A different depth can change how the buried animal relates to a heat source.
Note whether the substrate remains loose enough for normal movement and whether waste collects around a particular shelter. Keep the dated notes alongside shed and feeding records. They may help explain a change following maintenance without encouraging a guess that every refusal or incomplete shed has one simple cause.
Bring the useful history to the annual visit
The linked Colorado Exotics resource recommends regular physical and faecal examinations. Discuss scheduling and sample collection with your own veterinarian, especially if the snake has a poorly documented arrival history.
Prepare a short summary containing prey size, successful and refused meals, weights, sheds, substrate changes and actual enclosure readings. Add the scientific name and any known sex information. For an animal frequently concealed in bedding, these records provide context that an appointment-day appearance alone cannot supply. Preserve the veterinarian's instructions in the same profile so the next keeper knows what was advised.
