How we research and explain
reptile care.

The Creature Corner is a field guide for people who care about reptiles. Whether you are researching your first gecko or planning a much larger habitat, the aim is the same: help you understand the animal before choosing the setup.

The species comes first

“Reptile care” is not one set of instructions. A tortoise, an arboreal gecko, and a semi-aquatic monitor need very different environments. Each introduction states whether it covers one species, a group, or specialist preparation. Group introductions help you identify the next questions; the exact species and individual animal determine the setup.

Our sources and review process

Every care and build guide links to the publications behind it. We draw on veterinary and animal-welfare organizations and specialist husbandry resources. The articles are original source summaries and have not been independently reviewed for each species. Source links show where information came from; they do not imply endorsement by those organizations. Review status and substantive changes are visible on each guide.

Husbandry recommendations can differ, and equipment changes how they apply. Read the linked source for context, measure the enclosure itself, and consult a reptile veterinarian when health or individual needs are involved.

What an enclosure needs to provide

A beautiful enclosure still needs secure access, usable space, clean water, appropriate light, safe heating, and places to retreat. Our build guides treat those as the starting point. Plants and backgrounds come after the animal’s needs.

Corrections and responsibility

The Creature Corner maintains the site and its editorial queue. A named, qualified species reviewer has not yet been appointed. Read the review brief or offer a scoped review. Use the correction link on any guide to raise a concern; responses and status appear on your feedback page. We do not describe an article as reviewed or a build as tested without that work being completed.

A growing field guide

The collection includes 94 species introductions of varying depth, 20 construction guides, real enclosure references, planning tools, and a private keeper’s notebook with daily routines and care history. It is a starting library for a wide range of keepers, not a claim to cover every reptile. If a species is missing, do not substitute the care of an animal that looks similar.
