Adult enclosure recommendation
Our recommended minimum: 3′ × 2′ × 2′ (91.5 × 61 × 61 cm), length × depth × height.
Usable internal space for 1 adult animal. One adult Goniurosaurus hainanensis only; other Goniurosaurus require species-specific assessment.
Height is the usable internal envelope, including the space reserved for substrate and water. Check the remaining movement space and lamp clearance after installation.
Additional furnished space is preferred; no distinct numerical preferred threshold is established by the opened evidence.
Our minimum uses Swell's species-focused 3′ × 2′ × 2′ (91.44 × 60.96 × 60.96 cm) recommendation rather than the smaller 2′ × 18″ × 18″ (60.96 × 45.72 × 45.72 cm) example. This is an editorial choice among husbandry recommendations, not an experimentally validated minimum.

Meeting these dimensions alone does not establish suitability. Check the usable layout, environmental conditions, equipment clearance and the individual animal’s requirements before occupation.

Resolve the name first
Confirm Goniurosaurus hainanensis and captive-breeding history before purchase. “Chinese cave gecko” also labels other species with different origins. This guide covers the Hainan species only. Provide a quiet, sheltered habitat and expect most activity after dark. Plan for a potential ten to fifteen years of care.

A cooler, sheltered enclosure
Our recommended minimum for one adult is 3′ × 2′ × 2′ (91 × 61 × 61 cm), usable internal length × depth × height.
This adopts the species-focused Swell housing recommendation and provides more floor space than the 2′ × 18″ × 18″ (60.96 × 45.72 × 45.72 cm) genus-wide reference. It is an editorial welfare recommendation, not a tested cutoff. More covered floor space is preferred, without a separately supported numerical target. Provide rock-like crevices, low cork routes, leaf cover and shelters across the gradient. A 2–3 in (5–8 cm) soil/coir layer can retain moisture; support heavy furnishings independently. Dimensions alone cannot prevent overheating or supply safe cover. The stated height includes substrate, with room above for low climbing and safe lamp clearance.
Keep temperature and moisture distinct
Keep the warm area near 79°F (26°C) and daytime cool refuges near 68–72°F (20–22°C). For ordinary companion care we use nights around 68–72°F (20–22°C), avoiding deliberate deep cooling. Measure occupied shelters with independent probes and inspect the room during hot weather. Maintain about 60–70% ambient humidity with a damp refuge, allowing exposed surfaces to dry. Read a digital hygrometer away from spray. Extra misting does not cool overheated room air reliably.
Light and a growing insect eater
Offer daytime UVB (ultraviolet B) around UVI (ultraviolet index) 1–2 at the gecko’s back, with densely shaded hides and dark nights. Check mesh, fixture and nearest reachable surface rather than choosing a lamp percentage alone. Feed varied appropriately sized insects, daily for growing juveniles and initially on alternate days for adults. Gut-load prey and use calcium and vitamins under a coordinated label-based plan. Adjust adult portions to weight and condition.
Observation and daily care
Enjoy this gecko through evening observation rather than routine capture. Begin a new arrival in separate quarantine with its feeding history recorded. Watch actual intake, comparable weights and shed completion. Persistent appetite loss, weakness, retained shed or breathing changes need veterinary assessment. Keep a secure transfer container ready so a necessary move does not become a chase through rockwork.

Observe without dismantling shelter
Keep at least one familiar refuge in place during cleaning. Remove waste and contaminated bedding promptly and scrub the water dish when soiled. Test whether you can reach waste beneath cork and plants before making a permanent background. Juveniles need the same shelter choices on a scale that leaves food easy to locate; temporary monitoring housing is not the adult plan.
Where recommendations differ
Swell gives nights near 59°F (15°C), while ReptiFiles uses 68–72°F (20–22°C) in a broader cave-gecko protocol. The sources differ in species scope and seasonal assumptions and provide no comparative welfare trial. We retain the species-focused cooler daytime plan but recommend the milder overnight range for routine care. Deliberate cooling requires an identified animal, health assessment and an experienced species-specific plan. The enclosure sizes also differ; we favor the larger floor area for refuge choice.
Keep damp refuges clean
A damp retreat and a soaking enclosure are different conditions. Check refuge material daily for soiling and mold, and maintain air exchange. Record misting time beside humidity readings so temporary peaks are not mistaken for all-day exposure. Before summer, test a backup cool location and verify the entire day-night cycle after moving equipment. Do not adopt an automatic brumation routine for appetite loss.
